In the news...

September 2, 2009

The far-reaching conservation implications of this work and the first article that resulted from the project have been widely publicized in the electronic media in the US and Brazil, being featured by the UC Berkeley News, Mongabay, The New Scientist, BBC News, and the Ecological Society of America.  Brazilian newspapers such as O Globo, Jornal do Brasil, Estado de São Paulo, Folha de São Paulo, among other sites and blogs featured this work, including a short interview by Carnaval to BBC’s audio program “Science in Action”, which was broadcasted on National Public Radio.

Our results have also been used to illustrate the usefulness of an evolutionary biogeographic approach to biodiversity prediction in outreach materials recently produced by DIVERSITAS (Donoghue et al., 2009), and are being incorporated in a book that celebrates, discusses, and proposes ways to advance Darwin’s work (Moritz and Carnaval, in press).

The discoveries of new species and records during our initial field trips have narrowed the ties between our group and two NGOs actively involved and interested in purchasing land for forest protection in the Bahia region (Instituto Uiraçu and Conservation International).
